Turning Labour Values Into Action – Locally and Nationally

As a councillor and cabinet member in Southwark, I led on bringing in:

  • free healthy school meals for all primary pupils
  • university tuition fee scholarships for talented students from low income backgrounds
  • thousands of work opportunities for unemployed people
  • the living wage for front-line workers and contractors, including home care workers – and I made us one of the first two councils nationwide to sign up to Unison’s Ethical Homecare Charter, to end zero-hours contracts:  http://www.unison.org.uk/news/articles/islington-southwark-sign-care-charter

Plus, I have supported Labour’s front-bench teams on legislation and policy on jobs, welfare and education – so I know how to get things done in Westminster

I worked in public and private sector jobs for over 10 years before coming into politics

My council was the joint first council to sign up to the Charter. (more…)
